Orientation and Policies

The Pulse:

The two methods to count the heart rate are:

  • Place your index and middle finger, not your THUMB, which has its own pulse, at the artery in the inner wrist above the thumb joint.
  • Place these same fingers gently on the carotid artery. Do no let your thumb touch the other side of your neck at the same time - this could decrease the blood supply to the brain. The pulse is usually stronger on your dominant side. Begin counting the pulse with ZERO. The heart rate is timed for ten seconds. While exercising in class, refer to the displayed chart and work within the two given numbers corresponding with your age.

Body Awareness:

Learn to develop body awareness. Body alignment is vital in deriving the full benefit of any exercise program. Stand where the water will be at waist level. If you need more support to the spine, joints, or to be pregnancy safe, stand with the water at mid-chest level.

Do's and Don'ts

  • Do eat a small amount of complex carbohydrates if you exercise in the morning without breakfast to help sustain energy. Example: juice and toast
  • Do leave valuable jewelry at home. Always lock valuables in the car or a locker.
  • Do remove your gum before exercising -- it could interfere with your breathing.
  • Do make every effort to get to class on time. A proper warm-up is essential -- failure to do so may overload your cardiovascular system.
  • Do wait until the instructor arrives before getting into the water.
  • Do take a soap shower before class.
  • Do feel free to wear your glasses in the water.
  • Do signal your instructor if you need help. Do let your instructor know if you are leaving the pool during class. We want to be sure you are not feeling ill.
  • Do keep your instructor and substitute instructors informed of any changes in your medical condition. Do be aware we give specific cautions for neck and back. Your doctor's advice always preempts our instructions.
  • Do know Aquarobics™ is non-competitive. Exercise in your comfort range.

Sign-ups:

Aquarobics sessions are ongoing. Instructors will announce the sign-up dates for each session. Priority sign-up will be for all participating exercisers. The second sign-up will open to the wait list and the public. Class members wishing to hold their place in a class can do so by prepaying for all sessions that will be missed.

Refund:

Full refund will be given if you CANCEL BEFORE THE SESSION STARTS. A 50% refund will be given if you CANCEL DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF THE SESSION. No refund will be given after the first week of the session. Please call the Aquarobics office if you wish to cancel.

Make-up Classes:

Make-up classes can be attended on a space available basis. Make-ups must be prearranged with your instructor and take place at the same pool during the current session.

Guests:

Guests are welcome for one free visit. Any subsequent visits will be charged the current drop-in fee per class. Guests must complete a medical card and read the orientation-policy information. These can be obtained in advance from your instructor.

It will be the guest's responsibility to 1) exercise near the sponsor in an appropriate water depth. 2) exercise within your physical fitness ability. 3) follow the instructor's instructions and safety tips.

Class Cancellation:

During inclement weather or for other reasons beyond the control of the facility or instructor, it will be the responsibility of each class member to call the pool facility to learn if classes have been canceled. When schools are closed due to snow and icy conditions, classes will be canceled.
